Road Trip to Redemption

Road Trip to Redemption: A Disconnected Family, a Cross-Country Adventure, and an Amazing Journey

By Brad Mathias & Susy Flory / Tyndale Houseredemption

What would make a family pack up an SUV with 3 teenagers, travel across 14 states and 2 Canadian provinces? Answer: a family crisis. In Road Trip to Redemption, Brad Mathias, a Christian media executive, shares with readers the amazing adventure he embarked on after humbly realizing his parenting had not been the best. Somewhere along the way, they take root of the fact that God is interested in capturing their hearts as well as their minds. This book is for moms and dads [with kids (especially tweens) at home] who feel “adrift” and desire to reconnect as a family. This personal testimony of God’s restorative power combined with practical advice and guidance can help you navigate the dangerous waters in your own parenting journey. Includes an online discussion guide, a B/W photo at the start of each chapter to illustrate the family’s journey, and unedited journal entries by family members.

Brad Mathias thought everything in his family was fine. A busy, contented dad, he had vaguely noticed that Bethany, his middle child, had become withdrawn and moody, but he assumed it was part of being a “teen” and didn’t look any deeper. Until the night God spoke clearly to Brad and his wife: Ask her to reveal what she has hidden. They did—and learned the secret Bethany had been carrying, one that rocked their family to the core. In a desperate attempt to reach their daughter and to reconnect as a family, Brad and his wife piled everyone into the car and embarked on a wild, crazy, seven-thousand-mile, what-are-we-thinking trip across the country. As they drove, they realized how far apart they’d drifted, found unexpected blessings along the way—and journeyed together from pain and loss to recovery and redemption. In this book, Brad shares stories from the road about God’s grace, gives practical tips on what he learned about reconnecting as a family, invites you to consider your own epic journey as a mother or father, and calls you to trust wholeheartedly in the amazing love God has for your kids.

Even though I do not have children, I found the teaching in this book to be very enlightening. I believe Mathias provides examples of how we as Christians can include God in our families and be more like Jesus to others. There were many key statements and scripture verses, which have brought my own behaviors and ways of living into the light. Brad Mathias has caused me to view things and see examples of how I can do those things differently. There are Biblical truths displayed and represented all throughout the book. I enjoyed feeling like I was a part of this road trip and I was there taking it with them, even though I was never there physically.

I would highly recommend this book to all. Everyone should take a road trip with God.
