The Sabbath-New Testament

For the Son of Man is Lord of the Sabbath.”[AMP, Matthew 12:8]

Now when evening came, after the sun had set [and the Sabbath Day had ended, in a steady stream] they were bringing to Him all who were sick and those who were under the power of demons,[AMP, Matthew 1:32]

Jesus said to them, “The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath. So the Son of Man is Lord even of the Sabbath [and He has authority over it].”[AMP, Mark 2:27-28]

So He came to Nazareth, where He had been brought up; and as was His custom, He entered the synagogue on the Sabbath, and stood up to read.[AMP, Luke 4:16]

While the sun was setting [marking the end of theSabbath day], all those who had any who were sick with various diseases brought them to Jesus; and laying His hands on each one of them, He was healing them [exhibiting His authority as Messiah].[AMP, Luke 4:40]

Jesus was saying to them, “The Son of Man (the Messiah) is Lord [even] of the Sabbath.”[AMP, Luke 6:5]

Now it was on a Sabbath day that Jesus made the mud and opened the man’s eyes.[AMP, John 9:14]

Therefore let no one judge you in regard to food and drink or in regard to [the observance of] a festival or a new moon or a Sabbath day. Such things are only a shadow of what is to come and they have only symbolic value; but the substance [the reality of what is foreshadowed] belongs to Christ.[AMP, Colossians 2:16-17]

So there remains a [full and complete] Sabbath rest for the people of God. For the one who has once entered His rest has also rested from [the weariness and pain of] his [human] labors, just as God rested from [those labors uniquely] His own.[AMP, Hebrews 4:9-10]

The Sabbath-Old Testament

“Remember the Sabbath (seventh) day to keep it holy (set apart, dedicated to God).“Remember the Sabbath (seventh) day to keep it holy (set apart, dedicated to God).[AMP, Exodus 20:8]

but the seventh day is a Sabbath [a day of rest dedicated] to the Lord your God; on that day you shall not do any work, you or your son, or your daughter, or your male servant, or your female servant, or your livestock or the temporary resident (foreigner) who stays within your [city] gates.[AMP, Exodus 20:10]

For in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, the sea and everything that is in them, and He rested (ceased) on the seventh day. That is why the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy [that is, set it apart for His purposes].[AMP, Exodus 20:11]

“But as for you, say to the Israelites, ‘You shall most certainly observe My Sabbaths, for it is a sign between Me and you throughout your generations, so that you may know [without any doubt] and acknowledge that I am the Lord who sanctifies you and sets you apart [for Myself].[AMP, Exodus 31:13]

Therefore, you shall keep the Sabbath, for it is holy to you. Everyone who profanes it must be put to death; for whoever does work on the Sabbath, that person (soul) shall be cut off from among his people [excluding him from the atonement made for them].[AMP, Exodus 31:14]

For six days work may be done, but the seventh is theSabbath of complete rest, sacred to the Lord; whoever does work on the Sabbath day must be put to death.[AMP, Exodus 31:15]

So the Israelites shall observe the Sabbath, to celebrate the Sabbath throughout their generations as a perpetual covenant.’[AMP, Exodus 31:16]

“You shall work for six days, but on the seventh day you shall rest; [even] in plowing time and in harvest you shall rest [on the Sabbath].[AMP, Exodus 34:21]

“For six days work may be done, but the seventh day shall be a holy day for you, a Sabbath of complete rest to the Lord; whoever does any kind of work on that day shall be put to death.[AMP, Exodus 35:2]

It is a Sabbath of solemn rest for you, and you shall humble yourselves; it is a permanent statute.[AMP, Leviticus 16:31]

Each of you shall respect his mother and his father, and you shall keep My Sabbaths; I am the Lord your God.[AMP, Leviticus 19:3]

You shall keep My Sabbaths and revere My sanctuary. I am the Lord.[AMP, Leviticus 19:30]

[ The Sabbath ] ‘For six days work may be done, but the seventh day is the Sabbath of complete rest, a holy convocation (calling together). You shall not do any work [on that day]; it is the Sabbath of the Lord wherever you may be.[AMP, Leviticus 23:3]

“Speak to the children of Israel and say to them, ‘When you come into the land which I am giving you, then the land shall keep a Sabbath to the Lord.[AMP, Leviticus 25:2]

You shall keep My Sabbaths and have reverence for My sanctuary. I am the Lord.[AMP, Leviticus 26:2]

‘Observe the Sabbath day to keep it holy (set apart, dedicated to God), as the Lord your God commanded you.[AMP, Deuteronomy 5:12]

but the seventh day is a Sabbath [a day of rest dedicated] to the Lord your God; on that day you shall not do any work, you or your son or your daughter or your male servant or your female servant or your ox or your donkey or any of your livestock or the stranger who stays inside your [city] gates, so that your male servant and your female servant may rest as well as you.[AMP, Deuteronomy 5:14]

You shall remember [with thoughtful concern] that you were a slave in the land of Egypt, and that the Lord your God brought you out of there with a mighty hand and by an outstretched arm; therefore the Lord your God has commanded you to observe the Sabbath day.[AMP, Deuteronomy 5:15]

“Blessed (happy, fortunate) is the man who does this, And the son of man who takes hold of it, Who keeps theSabbath without profaning it, And keeps his hand from doing any evil.”[AMP, Isaiah 56:2]

“If you turn back your foot from unnecessary travel on] the Sabbath,
From doing your own pleasure on My holy day,
And call the Sabbath a [spiritual] delight, and the holy day of theLord honorable,
And honor it, not going your own way
Or engaging in your own pleasure
Or speaking your own [idle] words,

Then you will take pleasure in the Lord,
And I will make you ride on the high places of the earth,
And I will feed you with the [promised] heritage of Jacob your father;
For the mouth of the Lord has spoken.”[AMP, Isaiah 58:13-14]

You shall not carry a load out of your houses on theSabbath day nor do any work, but keep the Sabbath day holy [by setting it apart as a day of worship], as I commanded your fathers.[AMP, Jeremiah 17:22]

I gave them My statutes and explained My ordinances to them, which, if a man keeps, he will live. Also I gave them My Sabbaths to be a sign between Me and them, that they might know [without any doubt] that I am the Lord who sanctifies them (separates and sets them apart). But the house of Israel rebelled against Me in the wilderness. They did not walk in My statutes and they despised and rejected My ordinances, which, if a man keeps, he will live; and they greatly profaned My Sabbaths. Then I decided to pour out My wrath on them in the wilderness, to annihilate them.[AMP, Ezekiel 20:11-13]
