The Tongue

Some of the things that God’s Word says about the tongue…

Keep your tongue from evil And your lips from speaking deceit.(AMP, Psalm 34:13)

The mouth of the righteous proclaims wisdom, And his tongue speaks justice and truth.(AMP, Psalm 37:30)

I said, “I will guard my ways That I may not sin with my tongue; I will muzzle my mouth While the wicked are in my presence.”(AMP, Psalm 39:1)

“You give your mouth to evil And your tongue frames deceit.(AMP, Psalm 50:19)

Your tongue devises destruction, Like a sharp razor, working deceitfully.(AMP, Psalm 52:2)

I cried aloud to Him; He was highly praised with my tongue.(AMP, Psalm 66:17)

The tongue of the righteous is like precious silver (greatly valued); The heart of the wicked is worth little.(AMP, Proverbs 10:20)

The mouth of the righteous flows with [skillful and godly] wisdom, But the perverted tongue will be cut out.(AMP, Proverbs 10:31)

There is one who speaks rashly like the thrusts of a sword, But the tongue of the wise brings healing.(AMP, Proverbs 12:18)

A soothing tongue [speaking words that build up and encourage] is a tree of life, But a perversive tongue [speaking words that overwhelm and depress] crushes the spirit.(AMP, Proverbs 15:4)

Death and life are in the power of the tongue, And those who love it and indulge it will eat its fruit and bear the consequences of their words.(AMP, Proverbs 18:21)

He who guards his mouth and his tongue Guards himself from troubles.(AMP, Proverbs 21:23)

“Their tongue is a murderous arrow; It speaks deceit; With his mouth one speaks peace to his neighbor, But in his heart he lays traps and waits in ambush for him.(AMP, Jeremiah 9:8)

In the same sense, the tongue is a small part of the body, and yet it boasts of great things. See [by comparison] how great a forest is set on fire by a small spark! And the tongue is [in a sense] a fire, the very world of injustice and unrighteousness; the tongue is set among our members as that which contaminates the entire body, and sets on fire the course of our life [the cycle of man’s existence], and is itself set on fire by hell (Gehenna). For every species of beasts and birds, of reptiles and sea creatures, is tamed and has been tamed by the human race. But no one can tame the human tongue; it is a restless evil [undisciplined, unstable], full of deadly poison. With it we bless our Lord and Father, and with it we curse men, who have been made in the likeness of God. Out of the same mouth come both blessing and cursing. These things, my brothers, should not be this way [for we have a moral obligation to speak in a manner that reflects our fear of God and profound respect for His precepts].(AMP, James 3:5-10)

Little children (believers, dear ones), let us not love [merely in theory] with word or with tongue [giving lip service to compassion], but in action and in truth [in practice and in sincerity, because practical acts of love are more than words].(AMP, 1 John 3:18)
