Throughout the book of Judges it shows many times where Israel disobeyed God, turned away from Him, and chose to do what was right in their own eyes.
“And the children of Israel did evil in the sight of the LORD, and served Baalim: And they forsook the LORD God of their fathers, which brought them out of the land of Egypt, and followed other gods, of the gods of the people that were round about them, and bowed themselves unto them, and provoked the LORD to anger. And they forsook the LORD, and served Baal and Ashtaroth. And the anger of the LORD was hot against Israel, and he delivered them into the hands of spoilers…and he sold them…Withersoever they went out, the hand of the LORD was against them for evil…” (Judges 2:11-17,3:5-8)
It also shows how, after a time, Israel saw what they had done was not good and they went to God to repent of their evil ways. God forgave them and set a judge over them, that they might listen to and follow God’s ways once again.
“And when the LORD raised them up judges, the LORD was with the judge, and delivered them out of the hand of their enemies all the days of the judge: for it repented the LORD because of their groanings by reason of them that oppressed them and vexed them” (Judges 2:18, 3:9, 3:15, 4:3, 6:7-10, 10:10-16)
However, their decision to follow God’s ways and no longer their own ways, did not last. For once the judge was deceased, Israel went back to doing what was right in their own eyes.
“And it came to pass, when the judge was dead, that they returned, and corrupted themselves more than their fathers, in following other gods to serve them, and to bow down unto them; they ceased not from their own doings, nor from their stubborn way. And the anger of the LORD was hot against Israel;…” (Judges 2:23, 3:12-14, 4:1-2, 6:1, 8:33-35, 10:6-8, 13:1)
Do you see where this same pattern could be evident in today’s generations? The people follow God for a time, then they decide to do what they think is right, not what God has instructed them to do in His commandments. Has something in your life caused you to turn away from God and follow your own ways (what looks right in your eyes)? If so, you still have a chance to turn back to God and repent of what you did. He will forgive you and restore His blessings upon you. God is a god of many chances, as long as you repent of your ways with all your heart and truly mean it. God will invite you back with open arms. God has lots of love for you, but how can you receive it if your back is turned to Him and you will not even listen to what He says. I implore you, repent today and receive all that God has for you.
