The Kingdom of Heaven is at hand!
One of the commandments is to not make a false vow and do not make a vow by anything you do not have the power to change, rather make your vows and oaths to the Lord.
“Again, ye have heard that it hath been said by them of old time, Thou shalt not forswear thyself, but shalt perform unto the Lord thine oaths:” -Matthew 5:33 [KJV]
According to Dake’s Annotated Reference Bible (2011), the Greek word for forswear is epiorkeo, which means swear falsely. It also goes on to state, in reference to Matthew 5:33, “making vows by heaven, earth, or any other thing that we have no power to change is forbidden, but making vows and taking oaths to speak the truth is always right (p.8, NT)”.
Jesus says we are not to swear at all; by heaven, by earth, by Jerusalem, or by our own head. Instead our yes, should be yes and our no, should be no.
“But I say unto you, Swear not at all; neither by heaven; for it is God’s throne:
Nor by the earth; for it is his footstool: neither by Jerusalem; for it is the city of the great King.
Neither shalt thou swear by thy head, because thou canst not make one hair white or black.
But let your communication be, Yea, yea; Nay, nay: for whatsoever is more than these cometh of evil.” -Matthew 5:34-37 [KJV]
By this, I see it is important for us to live a life of truthfulness. If we live a life where we speak only truth and are upright in all of our actions, others will take our yes as being yes and our no as being no. There will be no need for swearing by anything for our character will show proof of our truthfullness.
Let us always speak the truth, no matter the cost. Let us not allow evil to enter into our lives by not being completely truthful.
