Plagues Directed at Egyptian Gods

I never really seen  this before, the many times that I have heard and read the book of Exodus and the story of Moses,  how each plague was chosen to be directed at a specific Egyptian god.  To show God’s power and the lack of power that the Egyptian gods had, God chose specific plagues to prove the ineffectiveness of specific gods. I also see the reason why there was more than one plague, so that all the gods that Egypt worshiped would be shown as ineffective against the one and only true God and his power. Not one of their gods could stand against our God.

First Plague

“And Moses and Aaron did so, as the LORD commanded; and he lifted up the rod, and smote the waters that were in the river, in the sight of Pharaoh,  and in the sight of his servants; and all the waters that were in the river were turned to blood. And the fish that was in the river died; and the river stank, and the Egyptians could not drink of the water of the river; and there was blood throughout all the land of Egypt.” -Exodus 7:20-21 [KJV]

Egyptians worshiped the Nile, it was called “the father of life” and ” the father of the gods”. They also abhorred blood. This plague was directed at the god Egyptians made out of the Nile.

Second Plague

“And Aaron stretched out his hand over the waters of Egypt; and the frogs came up, and covered the land of Egypt.” -Exodus 8:6 [KJV]

This plague was directed at the frog-god which was worshiped in Egypt.

Third Plague

“And they did so; for Aaron stretched out his hand with his rod, and smote the dust of the earth, and it became lice in man, and in beast; all the dust of the land became lice throughout all the land of Egypt.” -Exodus 8:17 [KJV]

This plague was directed at the insect-god of Egypt which was supposed to protect against insects.

Fourth Plague

“Else, if thou wilt  not let my people go, behold, I will send swarms of flies upon thee, and upon thy servants, and upon thy people, and into thy houses: and the houses of the Egyptians shall be full of swarms of flies, and also the ground whereon they are.” -Exodus 8:21 [KJV]

This plague was directed at Beelzebub, the god of flies which was worshiped to prevent the flies.

Fifth Plague

“Behold, the hand of the LORD is upon thy cattle which is in the field, upon the horses, upon the asses, upon the camels, upon the oxen, and upon the sheep: there shall be a very grievous murrain.” -Exodus 9:3 [KJV]

This plague was directed at the Egyptian gods which were manifested in animals.

Sixth Plague

“And the LORD said unto Moses and unto Aaron, Take to you handfuls of ashes of the furnace, and let Moses sprinkle it toward the heaven in the sight of Pharaoh. And it shall become small dust in all the land of Egypt, and shall be a boil breaking forth with blains upon man, and upon beast, throughout all the land of Egypt.” -Exodus 9:8-9 [KJV]

This plague was directed at the Egyptian god Typhon, “the Evil Principle”, which was supposed to avert plagues.

Seventh Plague

“Behold, to morrow about this time I will cause it to rain a very grievous hail, such as hath not been in Egypt since the foundation thereof even until now.” -Exodus 9:18 [KJV]

This plague was directed at Isis and Osiris, the Egyptian gods of light, health, fertility, arts, and agriculture.

Eighth Plague

“And the LORD said unto Moses, Stretch out thine hand over the land of Egypt for the locusts, that they may come up upon the land of Egypt, and eat every herb of the land, even all that the hail hath left.” -Exodus 10:12 [KJV]

This plague was directed at the Egyptian god Serapis, which was suppose to protect against locusts.

Ninth Plague

This plague was directed at Egypt’s  sun god.

Tenth Plague

“And all the firstborn in the land of Egypt shall die, from the firstborn of Pharaoh that sitteth upon his throne, even unto the firstborn of the maidservant that is behind the mill; and all the firstborn of beasts.” -Exodus 11:5 [KJV]

This plague was directed at all of the gods of Egypt.
